Most Shopify stores leave collection pages empty — no description, no SEO value. Here's a simple workflow to fix all of them at once using Claude and ShopMCP.
Most Shopify stores leave collection pages completely empty. No description, no context, no SEO value. Collection pages with descriptions rank for 3× more keyword variations than those without. Here's a practical workflow to fix all of them at once.
Option 1: Migrate from an existing site
If you're moving from an old site, your category pages already have real descriptions — specific, on-brand, written by someone who knows the products. Use those verbatim. They'll always beat anything AI writes from scratch.
Tell Claude:
"Here's a list of my Shopify collections and their old site URLs. Fetch each page, extract the category description, and put it in the sheet. If a page has no description or can't be fetched, leave it empty — don't write anything."
Claude fetches each page, pulls the text, and drops it in your tracking sheet. No copy-pasting, no rewriting.
Option 2: Write from Search Console data
No old site? Connect Search Console to Claude and let real search data drive the description. This way you're writing for the keywords people actually use to find that collection.
Tell Claude:
"Pull Search Console data for the Trail Running Shoes collection page. Show me the top queries by clicks and impressions, then write a 150-word collection description that naturally includes the strongest keywords."
The result is a description optimized for how real customers search — not generic category copy.
Push to Shopify
Once you have descriptions ready, push them all in one go:
"Go through each row in the sheet that has a description. For each one, update the Shopify collection using shopify_update_collection with the description formatted as HTML paragraphs. Verify the collection ID matches before pushing each one."
A store with 20 collections takes a few minutes. Always test one first and check it in the admin before running the rest — a wrong collection ID sends the description to the wrong place.
Key rules
- Only use text from a real source or real search data — no generic filler
- If there's no source and no Search Console data, leave it empty for now
- Always verify collection IDs before a bulk push
- Test one collection first
