What about Shopify’s official MCP?

Shopify has official MCP tools, but they serve different purposes. The Storefront MCP lets shoppers browse and buy — it doesn’t let you manage your store. The Dev MCP connects to Shopify’s documentation for developers writing code. To actually edit your store via MCP you need a community-built Admin API server, which requires installing Node.js, configuring JSON files manually, and managing a raw API token. No. ShopMCP connects Claude to your Shopify store so you can make changes by describing them in plain language. If you can write a message, you can edit your store.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard that lets Claude connect to external tools and services. ShopMCP works with both Claude.ai (just a browser tab — no install needed) and Claude Desktop. The easiest way to start is Claude.ai: add your ShopMCP connector URL in Settings → Connectors and you're ready. Setup takes about two minutes and we walk you through it in the documentation.

ShopMCP works with any Claude plan, including the free tier — you can get a lot done without paying for Claude at all. For model choice, Claude Sonnet (the default mid-range model) works great and is what we use ourselves day-to-day. You don’t need Opus. ShopMCP tools are efficient with tokens, so even lighter models handle most store tasks comfortably. If you’re doing heavy bulk work you can upgrade, but most merchants never need to.

Both plans include all current ShopMCP features — theme editing, page and blog creation, navigation editing, CSV product import, and bulk product editing. Basic adds priority support and will include the upcoming AI Google Shopping feed editor when it launches.

Yes. ShopMCP connects to one Shopify store per install — so if you manage 5 client stores, you install ShopMCP on each one. Each store gets its own MCP URL with its own secure token. In Claude you add them as separate connectors and switch between them as needed. Many agencies use ShopMCP to speed up content updates, page creation, and theme edits across all their clients.

Yes, in a practical way. ShopMCP has a built-in community where merchants and agencies share what worked — prompts, fixes, and approaches for real Shopify tasks. Claude can search this knowledge base during your conversation, so solutions other users have figured out are available to you automatically. The more the community grows, the better Claude gets at Shopify-specific tasks without you having to figure everything out yourself.

Yes. Install ShopMCP on each store, generate a connector URL for each one, and add them all to Claude as separate connectors. Claude can then work on any of your stores in the same conversation — just tell it which store you mean. This is particularly useful for agencies managing multiple client sites. Yes. Shopify partner development stores and client transfer stores get free access automatically — Shopify doesn't allow paid app subscriptions on these store types, so we grant access without any billing step. When a client transfer store moves to a live paid Shopify plan, the normal trial and subscription flow applies.
