PayPal setup on Shopify only takes a couple minutes — here's how, plus the next move that actually gets your products selling.
Good news: Shopify already half-does this for you. When you created your store, Shopify auto-linked a basic PayPal account using your signup email. You just need to finish the setup.
How to add PayPal
- Go to Settings → Payments
- Find PayPal, click Activate
- Log in to PayPal, click Grant Permission
- Done — PayPal now shows at checkout
That's it. Takes about 2 minutes.
Don't see PayPal at all?
Two usual suspects:
- Currency mismatch — your store currency (Settings → General) has to be one PayPal supports for your account
- Personal PayPal account — upgrade to PayPal Business, it's free and takes a few minutes
You're not the only one hitting this — plenty of merchants ask the same thing on the Shopify Community.
One setting worth turning on: guest checkout
By default, a customer needs a PayPal account to pay. Turn on guest checkout (PayPal calls it "PayPal Account Optional") and they can pay by card instead — no account, no login, no signup screen. Fewer steps between "add to cart" and "paid" means fewer people bailing halfway through.
Here's where to flip it on:
- Log in to your PayPal account at paypal.com
- Click the profile/settings icon in the top right, then Account Settings
- Select Website Payments from the left-hand menu
- Next to Website preferences, click Update
- Find PayPal Account Optional and switch it to On
- Save
A couple of things to know before you go looking for it:
- You need a PayPal Business (or Premier) account — personal accounts don't get this option
- Your PayPal email needs to be confirmed first
- Even with it turned on, PayPal decides case-by-case whether to show the guest option to a given buyer — things like their location, purchase history, and fraud checks can affect it. So don't panic if it's not 100% of buyers, that's normal.
Test it in an incognito browser window afterward — if you're logged into your own PayPal account, PayPal will assume you want to use it and won't show you the guest flow.
Cost?
Free to set up. You just pay the normal per-transaction fee, like any payment method.

For a Shopify store, Google Shopping ads are usually your best-performing ad type. Think about why: a shopper searches "wireless earbuds," and your product photo + price shows up right in the results. They already know what it costs before they click. That converts a lot better than a plain text ad.
To show up there, Google needs your product data first:
- Create a Google Merchant Center account
- Install Shopify's Google & YouTube app to connect it
- Google pulls in your titles, photos, prices automatically
- Once approved — you're eligible for free listings and paid Shopping ads
Bonus: this same connection is what lets you use Customer Match later, to retarget people who already bought from you.
Two things, five minutes each: PayPal removes friction at checkout, Merchant Center gets you found in the first place. Worth doing both early.
